Somalia’s labor movement is making its presence felt on the global stage as Mohamed Ali, the newly elected President of the Somali Construction and Engineering Workers Union (SOCEWU), attends the 113th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva.

Ali, who also serves as Executive Vice President of the Somali Confederation of Trade Unions (SOCOTU), is using this platform to advocate for Somali workers’ rights and to highlight the challenges and achievements of Somalia’s labor sector. His participation underscores Somalia’s commitment to engaging with international labor standards and promoting the welfare of its workforce.

At the ILC, delegates from around the world gather to discuss critical issues such as fair wages, safe working conditions, and social protection. Ali’s voice represents not just SOCEWU members but the broader Somali labor community, emphasizing the importance of strengthening workers’ rights in a rapidly developing nation.

“Being here at the ILC is an opportunity to bring Somali workers’ concerns to the global arena,” Ali said. “It is also a chance to learn from international best practices that can be applied back home to improve working conditions and empower our workforce.”

With this engagement, SOCEWU and SOCOTU continue to demonstrate leadership in advocating for labor rights, ensuring that Somali workers have a seat at the table where decisions affecting their future are made.
